Trump Orders Maritime Action Plan

On April 9, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to revitalize the U.S. maritime industry and counter China’s dominance in global shipping. The order mandates the creation of a “Maritime Action Plan” within 210 days, focusing on upgrading port infrastructure, investing in workforce training, and expanding U.S. shipbuilding capabilities. Currently, the U.S. produces less than 1% of global commercial ships, while China builds over half. The plan includes proposals such as imposing fees on Chinese-built vessels docking at U.S. ports, and requiring a percentage of U.S. exports to be carried on American-built ships.
Amazon Launches New LTL Service

Amazon has officially entered the U.S. less-than-truckload (LTL) market by offering inbound shipping services to its fulfillment centers, aiming to enhance logistics efficiency for its sellers. This move follows the company’s LTL program launches in the UK and Germany, where it achieved high on-time delivery rates. In what may not be coincidental move, UPS has relaunched their service targeting the LTL market. They had previously sold its LTL division in 2021.
Mack Trucks Unveils the Pioneer
Mack Trucks (a subsidiary of Volvo) unveiled its new long-haul semi-truck. The Mack Pioneer was introduced, during a New York City event, in an effort to increase the company’s Class 8 market share. This model, succeeding the 2017 Anthem, features significant upgrades in performance, fuel efficiency, and driver comfort. Volvo Group President Stephen Roy described it as an “industry disrupter,” designed to compete in 70% of the market. The truck includes advanced infotainment options, improved aerodynamics, and enhanced powertrains. Mack has also brought cab assembly in-house by acquiring a facility in North Carolina, addressing supply chain issues.
